Chapter I
Mary Ann Carson was grumpy. She’d tried all day to think of a project to do for her 4-H club. All of the members of Berryfield 4-H would choose a project from a list of categories. When the projects were complete, they’d be judged at the county fair. Although the fair was still three long months away, the time always seemed to slip away among her other summer activities and responsibilities. Worse than that, her neighbor Zack Tate had goaded her into a bet.
“He’s always getting me into trouble somehow,” Mary Ann grumbled to herself. On the bus ride home Zack found out that they had chosen the same category. He had told her that she’d better decide on something else because he was sure to win. Angrily, she’d bet him a week’s chores that her project would beat his. If she lost, she’d have to work on the Tate’s dairy farm in addition to what she already had to do on her family’s fruit farm. And now she couldn’t decide what to make!
