I actually see this as a possibility for putting these books in the libraries our AIDS orphans use in there school in Kitale, Kenya, as well as our missionary families, and the Messiah Theological Institute students’ children. We are looking for ways to teach science and math through an ag project on the Kitale Children’s Home campus. I see these being helpful in teaching citizenship and character. “Character Counts” you know.

I was raised on a farm, but my children have always lived in the city. I would love for them and the neighborhood kids to experience the joys of farm life. Berry Books weave the details of work and fun involved in farming together in such an innovative way that reading them brings the farm to town.

My academic training is physiology from a College of Veterinary Science. Therefore, I understand the complexities of individual animals. The complexity is compounded as individual biological entities, plant and animal, are managed in an agricultural environment. I am convinced that Berry Books will work for the Greater Good in helping not only children, but parents, teachers, and other care-givers experience the Aha! moments, or what is called the teachable moments about our food and fiber. In addition, the dual lesson concept with Greater Good issues will turn on the light bulb with many adults who will also experience the Aha! moments as they are developing lifetime values in their children.

“Field of Beans is a great way to tell the story of how important soybeans are to everyone’s daily life. All kids can relate to ‘Jack and the Beanstalk,’ and this story will capture their interest with a review of the many uses of soybeans—from food and printing ink to livestock feed, building materials, and cosmetics. This ‘Miracle Bean’ can be found in products almost anywhere you look! The book also provides an experiment and an activity page for young readers to apply what they have learned.”
